Question 1:

From Rich:
An area woodworking skilled elucidated the numerous virtues of the skew block airplane, together with that of becoming a tenon to a mortise. I bought the airplane and after a virtually a 12 months of heavy use, am extraordinarily glad.

Perhaps naively, I imagine the skew airplane obviates the necessity for a shoulder airplane. Have you all used the skew block and if that’s the case, imagine there to be a practical limitation when contrasted with a shoulder airplane? I’m not on the lookout for an excuse to buy a software I don’t personal. ?

Question 2:

From Ron:
I really like the present and journal!  I’m contemplating my first actual woodworking bench.  I’m contemplating each buying, or constructing a customized one.  My query is do you like spherical or sq. canine holes, and why?  I’ve seen each fashion holes on widespread, nicely regarded benches on the market, so it doesn’t look like a common desire.

Question 3:

From Devin:
I solely flirted with panel saws earlier than I obtained a desk noticed. I had thought I used to be fairly good with my hand saws however I’ve grow to be obsessive about chair making and this has led to mud amassing on plenty of these saws. I’ve since gotten rid of my desk noticed (gasp!) for house saving measures. So I took out my panel noticed and I observed that at any time when I pull the noticed again, it wobbles again and Forth. For as a lot as I recognize the nice sound of an enormous noticed wiggling, I ponder if that’s solely good to the foley artists of the world.

Is this wobble a sign of dangerous sawing approach? In idea, would one not introduce any lateral motion, eliminating this phenomenon?

Question 4:

From David:
My woodworking buddies usually bounce questions and concepts off one another.  My good friend, Sri, despatched this query round to a couple of us.  One of the group advised that he ship it into Shop Talk Live, however I don’t assume he’s going to, so I’m sending it on his behalf.

“Gentlemen, a question about how to most easily get my work bench top level: my Sjoberg bench top is just about 1 and 1/4 inch thick. It has distinct concavity about 3/16 to 1/4  inch deep towards one end which has persisted a year at least now. I don’t think I can flatten the top by hand planing or with router sled for fear that the top will get too thin. Do you folks think I can pour table top epoxy / resin to fill in the depression instead? Essentially making the table top thicker with self leveling epoxy / resin and thus getting rid of the concavity?”

After some forwards and backwards, the group thought that epoxy wouldn’t maintain up very nicely to the trials of a piece bench.  So, it was advised that he pour a skinny layer of epoxy, simply to degree it, after which screw a layer of MDF on prime.  We felt that though the MDF may not maintain up over time, it could be simpler (and cheaper) to exchange than would epoxy.  We additionally felt MDF can be a more sensible choice than Baltic Birch plywood (which might dent extra simply).

What are your ideas about this, and the way would you counsel flattening the workbench?
