In the closely forested city of Akiota in Hiroshima Prefecture lives 87-year-outdated craftsman Fumio Yokohata, who has been making traditional Japanese ladles for over 70 years fully by hand. With strategies handed down from the late Edo interval, he does a lot of the ultimate shaping with a one-handed block airplane with a curved sole and roughs out the bowl with beveled-edge chisels which have closely cambered blades, akin to a “scrub” chisel.
Despite the tough and seemingly unwieldy nature of his instruments, his accuracy seems nearly easy–although to explain it in such a method feels nearly like a disservice to his craft. It takes just one glimpse into his course of to know simply how practiced his fingers are. Though Yokohata’s store and gallery is the final of its form in Akiota, it’s definitely nonetheless thriving.
