In the closely forested city of Akiota in Hiroshima Prefecture lives 87-year-outdated craftsman Fumio Yokohata, who has been making traditional Japanese ladles for over 70 years fully by hand. With strategies handed down from the late Edo interval, he does a lot of the ultimate shaping with a one-handed block airplane with a curved sole and roughs out the bowl with beveled-edge chisels which have closely cambered blades, akin to a “scrub” chisel.
Despite the tough and seemingly unwieldy nature of his instruments, his accuracy seems nearly easy–although to explain it in such a method feels nearly like a disservice to his craft.
